TWIN TOWNS & CLUB BANORA DONATE $20,000 FOR SHADE SAILS
Thanks to Tweed Community Clubs, kids at Bogangar Public School can now enjoy sun-protected playtime all year round under giant shade sails in their playground.
New playground equipment was recently installed earlier this year, thanks to a $98,000 Community Building Partnership grant, supported by Member for Tweed Geoff Provest, MP. An additional $30,000 was raised by the P&C.
Unfortunately, skyrocketing construction costs and lengthy building delays left nothing in the budget for shade sails to cover this new equipment.
They turned to their local Clubs for help, and they delivered!
Cabarita Beach Bowls & Sports Club donated $23,250, $20,000 was donated by Twin Towns and Club Banora, and $10,000 came from Pottsville Beach Sports Club. The Bogangar P&C contributed an additional $12,000, and the shade sails are now in place.
“No amount of sausage sizzles and bake sales could have raised the money we needed for this essential infrastructure,” said Bogangar Public School P&C President, Lucy Campion.
“Where we are in Northern NSW means that UV levels are strong enough to cause skin damage all year round.
“This shade cover will go a long way in protecting our children’s skin while they are active outside,” said Lucy.
Twin Towns Community Engagement Officer Kym Kranen said school kids use their playgrounds during times when UV levels are at their peak.
“The Cancer Council warns about skin damage during childhood which is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life.
“Our rates of skin cancer are amongst the highest in the world and minimising UV exposure from a young age is crucial.
“Our Board was unanimous in their support for this project. All kids deserve a safe and healthy environment, especially during school hours.”
The Bogangar School shade sails are a great example of how Tweed Community Clubs are ‘stronger together’, joining forces to maximise funding of this worthwhile project for local kids.
