TWEED TEENS SWITCHED ON!
THANKS TO TWIN TOWNS
Twin Towns received two applications from local community organisation, The Family Centre at Tweed Heads South.
One was a request for $54,000 to purchase a Kia van which could be used to transport families and their belongings in domestic and family violence situations. This was approved.
The second application was for $24,500 to fund Switched On! for local high school students across the Tweed, Byron and Ballina Shires.
Switched On! is a one day course which provides students with critical information about domestic and family violence, healthy intimate relationships and setting boundaries.
The Board decided that this program, designed to hit at the very core of domestic and family violence by addressing the issue at a young age, was invaluable.
Reducing the incidence of domestic and family violence in the local community, even in a small way, could perhaps reduce the need for vans to transport families caught up in these situations.
This funding was unanimously approved.
Thanks to Twin Towns funding, Switched On! is now being conducted across the Tweed, Byron and Ballina Shires – Banora Point, Murwillumbah Learning Community, Tweed River, Kingscliff, Byron, Mullumbimby and Ballina Coast High Schools.
Switched On! will be delivered to approximately 700 students.
Since the introduction of Switched On! in Ballina and Byron schools, the number of teens having access to this important course is growing, organically!
The Family Centre has been contacted by several private schools in the Northern Rivers region who heard the course was being conducted in local state high schools.
As a result, The Family Centre has been paid to conduct Switched On! for an additional 25 teens attending a private school at Byron Bay.
